Corn Stocks Up 13 Percent from December 2022
Soybean Stocks Down 1 Percent
All Wheat Stocks Up 8 Percent
Corn stored in all positions on December 1, 2023 totaled
12.2 billion bushels, up 13 percent from December 1, 2022. Of the total
stocks, 7.83 billion bushels are stored on farms, up 16 percent from a year
earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 4.34 billion bushels, are up 7 percent from a
year ago. The September - November 2023 indicated disappearance is
4.53 billion bushels, compared with 4.21 billion bushels during the same
period last year.
Soybeans stored in all positions on December 1, 2023 totaled 3.00 billion
bushels, down 1 percent from December 1, 2022. Soybean stocks stored on farms
totaled 1.45 billion bushels, down 2 percent from a year ago. Off-farm
stocks, at 1.55 billion bushels, are up slightly from last December.
Indicated disappearance for September - November 2023 totaled 1.43 billion
bushels, down 6 percent from the same period a year earlier.
All wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2023 totaled 1.41 billion
bushels, up 8 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at
395 million bushels, up 9 percent from last December. Off-farm stocks, at
1.02 billion bushels, are up 7 percent from a year ago. The
September - November 2023 indicated disappearance is 357 million bushels,
23 percent below the same period a year earlier.
Durum wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2023 totaled 41.3 million
bushels, down 14 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 20.6 million
bushels, are down 20 percent from December 1, 2022. Off-farm stocks totaled
20.7 million bushels, down 7 percent from a year ago. The
September - November 2023 indicated disappearance of 16.0 million bushels is
181 percent above the same period a year earlier.
Barley stored in all positions on December 1, 2023 totaled 142 million
bushels, up 3 percent from December 1, 2022. On-farm stocks are estimated at
85.9 million bushels, 1 percent below a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at
56.3 million bushels, are 9 percent above December 2022. The
September - November 2023 indicated disappearance is 37.6 million bushels,
39 percent above the same period a year earlier.
Oats stored in all positions on December 1, 2023 totaled 62.6 million
bushels, up 17 percent from the stocks on December 1, 2022. Of the total
stocks on hand, 24.0 million bushels are stored on farms, down 1 percent from
a year ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 38.5 million bushels, up 31 percent from
the previous year. Indicated disappearance during September - November 2023
totaled 12.7 million bushels.
Grain sorghum stored in all positions on December 1, 2023 totaled 188 million
bushels, up 18 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at
33.0 million bushels, are up 85 percent from December 1 last year. Off-farm
stocks, at 155 million bushels, are up 9 percent from a year earlier. The
September - November 2023 indicated disappearance from all positions is
154 million bushels, up 105 percent from the same period in 2022.
Pulse crops stored in all positions on December 1, 2023 are: dry edible peas,
8.57 million cwt; lentils, 2.82 million cwt; all chickpeas, 3.19 million cwt;
small chickpeas, 946 thousand cwt; and large chickpeas, 2.25 million cwt.

On-Farm Grain Storage Capacity Up Slightly from Last Year
The United States on-farm storage capacity totaled 13.6 billion bushels on
December 1, 2023, up slightly from the December 1, 2022 estimate. Iowa
continues to lead all States with 2.05 billion bushels of on-farm storage
capacity followed by Minnesota with 1.55 billion bushels. Other major States
include Illinois with 1.50 billion bushels, Nebraska with 1.20 billion
bushels, North Dakota with 930 million bushels, and Indiana with 860 million
bushels of on-farm storage capacity. These six States account for 60 percent
of the Nation's on-farm storage capacity. On-farm grain storage capacity
includes all bins, cribs, sheds, and other structures located on farms that
are normally used to store whole grains, oilseeds, or pulse crops.

Off-Farm Grain Storage Capacity and Facilities
Capacity of off-farm commercial grain storage in the United States totaled
11.9 billion bushels on December 1, 2023, up less than 1 percent from the
December 1, 2022 total. The largest increases occurred in Illinois where an
additional 30.0 million bushels of capacity were added since
December 1, 2022. Other notable increases were shown in Kansas, where
capacity increased 20.0 million bushels, and Iowa and Washington, which were
both up 10.0 million bushels from 2022.
Illinois and Iowa remained the two largest off-farm storage capacity States
during 2023 with 1.68 billion and 1.53 billion bushels respectively. Kansas
was the third largest, followed by Nebraska and Minnesota. These five States
accounted for 53 percent of the Nation's off-farm storage capacity on
December 1, 2023.
Off-farm grain storage capacity includes all elevators, warehouses,
terminals, merchant mills, other storage, and oilseed crushers which store
whole grains, soybeans, canola, flaxseed, mustard seed, safflower, sunflower,
rapeseed, Austrian winter peas, dry edible peas, lentils, and
chickpeas/garbanzo beans. Capacity data exclude facilities used to store only
rice or peanuts, oilseed crushers processing only cottonseed or peanuts,
tobacco warehouses, seed warehouses, and storage facilities that handle only
dry edible beans, other than chickpeas/garbanzo beans.
Off-farm storage facilities totaled 8,004 on December 1, 2023, down 1 percent
from the December 1, 2022 estimate. States with the largest number of
facilities include Iowa with 830, Illinois with 800, Kansas with 690,
Minnesota with 490, and Nebraska with 485.

Statistical Methodology
Survey Procedures: The grain stocks estimates in this report are based on
surveys conducted during the first 2 weeks of December. Separate surveys are
conducted to obtain the on-farm and off-farm estimates. The on-farm stocks
survey is a probability survey that includes a sample of approximately
72,200 farm operators selected from a list of producers that ensures all
operations in the United States have a chance to be selected. These producers
are asked to provide the total quantities of grain stored on their operations
as of December 1, 2023. This includes all whole grains and oilseeds stored
whether for feed, seed, or sale as well as any stored under a government
program.
The off-farm stocks survey is an enumeration of all known commercial grain
storage facilities. This includes approximately 8,000 facilities with
11.9 billion bushels of storage capacity. An effort is made to obtain a
report from all facilities. Reports of stock holdings are normally received
from operations covering about 90 percent of the capacity. Estimates are made
for missing facilities to make the survey complete.
Estimation Procedures: On-farm and off-farm survey data are reviewed at the
State and National levels for reasonableness, consistency with historical
estimates, and current crop size. After estimates are made for on-farm and
off-farm stocks, the totals of these two are combined and evaluated using the
balance sheet approach. This method utilizes other sources of data to check
the reasonableness of the stocks estimates. Estimates of production, imports,
exports, crushings, millings, and all other recorded uses of grains and
oilseeds are reviewed to make sure beginning stocks, production, utilization,
and ending stocks are within reasonable balance and present the best possible
estimate of stocks.
Revision Policy: On-farm and off-farm stocks are subject to revision the
quarter following initial publication and again in the following December 1
Grain Stocks report published in January each year. Revisions can be made
when late reports are received, errors are detected in reporting and
calculations, and production estimates are revised. Estimates will also be
reviewed following the 5-year Census of Agriculture. No revisions to these
years will be made after that date.
Reliability: Reliability of the on-farm and off-farm stocks must be treated
separately because the survey designs for the two surveys are very different.
The on-farm stocks estimates are subject to sampling variability because all
operations holding on-farm stocks are not included in the sample. This
variability, as measured by the relative standard error at the United States
level, is approximately 1.7 percent for corn, 2.0 percent for soybeans, and
3.6 percent for all wheat. This means that chances are approximately 95 out
of 100 that survey estimates for stocks will be within plus or minus
3.4 percent for corn, 4.0 percent for soybeans, and 7.2 percent for all wheat
of the value that could be developed by averaging the estimates produced from
all possible samples selected from the same population and surveyed using the
same procedures. The relative standard errors for sorghum, barley, and oats
are 9.1, 3.7, and 5.5 percent, respectively.
Survey indications are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission,
duplication, imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting,
recording, and processing the data. Off-farm, as well as on-farm stocks, are
subject to these types of errors. These errors cannot be measured directly,
but they are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection
process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and
reasonableness.

Access to NASS Reports
For your convenience, you may access NASS reports and products the following
ways:
All reports are available electronically, at no cost, on the NASS web
site: www.nass.usda.gov.
Both national and state specific reports are available via a free e-
mail subscription. To set-up this free subscription, visit
www.nass.usda.gov and click on "National" or "State" in upper right
corner above "search" box to create an account and select the reports
you would like to receive.
Cornell's Mann Library has launched a new website housing NASS's and
other agency's archived reports. The new website,
https://usda.library.cornell.edu. All email subscriptions containing
reports will be sent from the new website,
https://usda.library.cornell.edu. To continue receiving the reports via
e-mail, you will have to go to the new website, create a new account
and re-subscribe to the reports. If you need instructions to set up an
account or subscribe, they are located at:
https://usda.library.cornell.edu/help. You should whitelist
notifications@usda-esmis.library.cornell.edu in your email client to
avoid the emails going into spam/junk folders.
